As the biggest bone in the foot, the heel provides support for the weight of the body and absorbs the impact of the foot when walking or running. Heel pain can occur due to a walking gait abnormality, an injury or bruise incurred while walking or running, weight, or poorly constructed footwear. Common causes of heel pain include heel spurs/plantar fasciitis, excessive pronation and Achilles tendonitis.
Foot expert Dr. Mauriello will examine the heel and determine the root of the problem to provide the treatment that will work best for you. Early treatment may include injectable anti-inflammatory medication and shoe recommendations or use of shoe inserts. Surgery is usually the last resort and may be recommended only if absolutely necessary.
